Today, the storage server is no longer a stand alone file server, but instead storage devices are abstracted from the server. IT pros are now required to make important decisions about which storage to choose for a particular task, and to help with that process it is necessary to understand the high-level differences between block level storage and file level storage. Block level storage is common on Storage Area Networks (SAN), where it presents itself to servers using industry standard Fiber Channel and iSCSI connectivity mechanisms.
In its most basic form, block level storage is like a hard drive in a server except that it happens to be installed in a remote chassis that is connected to the server. While block level storage is extremely flexible, nothing beats the simplicity of file level storage when all that is needed is a place to dump raw files. These file level devices, usually Network Attached Storage (NAS), provide a lot of space at a lower cost than block level storage.
HP is working hard on its new EVE line of storage arrays and will officially showcase the storage arrays next month. It is expected that the new EVE storage will feature important upgrades and new naming method which will makes solution providers' tasks easier. HP's Marketing President said that the company's new EVE storage line with perform a lot better and have a greater management efficiency.
HP has been increasing its storage capabilities during the last five years, and in addition to EVA, it also has 3Par and LeftHand storage products. It was earlier believed that with the acquisition of other storage companies, EVA storage systems would be phased out, but clearly HP is still keeping all its options open.
