The development of computer technology has led to many productivity advantages for many individuals, but they have also increased the number of virtual and data security threats. Nonetheless, some new laptop computers contain hidden spyware which can actually benefit the owner, as this spy software is designed to track the exact location of the computer in the event that it is stolen. The software can track the location precisely and even take pictures of the criminal when they open the lid. It then stores this information as evidence which is emailed to the store where the computer was taken from. This allows the store manager to provide police with precise information to track down the thief, including a detailed map. The sophisticated software, known as Undercover, can make all the difference between getting the laptop back or not. The criminals have no idea that the laptop is tracking their location or taking pictures of them, so they don't have time to run before police are at their door.

Today, the storage server is no longer a stand alone file server, but instead storage devices are abstracted from the server. IT pros are now required to make important decisions about which storage to choose for a particular task, and to help with that process it is necessary to understand the high-level differences between block level storage and file level storage. Block level storage is common on Storage Area Networks (SAN), where it presents itself to servers using industry standard Fiber Channel and iSCSI connectivity mechanisms.

In its most basic form, block level storage is like a hard drive in a server except that it happens to be installed in a remote chassis that is connected to the server. While block level storage is extremely flexible, nothing beats the simplicity of file level storage when all that is needed is a place to dump raw files. These file level devices, usually Network Attached Storage (NAS), provide a lot of space at a lower cost than block level storage.
