The WiFi Data Exposure
Filed in archive Security on March 31, 2007
You're sitting in a coffee shop sipping down a double half-caf mocha Latte and checking your emails from work. But have you considered that the wireless network you're on may in fact be an identical facsimile of the wireless network provided by the retailer, and that thieves are using that network to steal your data? Hackers have been setting up dummy WiFi networks and luring unsuspecting surfers into connecting, which allows the hackers to plant viruses that will allow them to swipe all your data. The "evil twin" or "man in the middle" scam has been around longer than you think. The FBI has been aware of the problem for five years, yet to date no convictions have occurred.
