In response to the closure of AOL's Xdrive service, SpiderOak this week announced a 10% discount on its online backup services for the first 5,000 former Xdrive users who sign up for paid accounts with SpiderOak using the promo code "xdrive."

Standard SpiderOak pricing is $10 per month for 2 to 100 GB, and $10 per month for each additional 100 GB increment. The first 2 GB are free.

Of course, SpiderOak's not the only one – ElephantDrive is also courting Xdrive users – and many other providers will doubtless soon do the same…

Before you make the leap, InformationWeek's Howard Marks strongly recommends that you consider all your options carefully. "While I'm still an online backup fan, do-it-yourself and peer-to-peer systems like CrashPlan are looking like a better idea," he writes.

More here from BetaNews … and SpiderOak's press release is here.

    Just some feedback…. I used the ElephantDrive system for moving my account from Xdrive. It took a little while to get started, but once it got going the transfer happened pretty fast (I didn’t have that much there – only about 2 GB). It seemed pretty simple to me. I’ll have to use the service for a while before I know if it will be a good replacement, but for now I’m giving it a shot.

    Listen up Xdrive Consumers….! XDMOlson is going to hook you all up with the easiest way to transfer your Xdrive digital assets to another provider.

    I know there are a lot of other providers out there, check out my previous post about the Ultimate Review List of Best Free Online Storage and Backup Application Services…

    However XDMOlson is going to recommend selecting ElephantDrive for current Xdrive consumers. They have worked out an agreement with Xdrive to make transferring those digital assets over as easy as possible.

    @ Bryan,

    Thanks for the feedback and for giving ElephantDrive the opportunity to handle your online storage needs. let me know if you have any other questions. For other Xdrive account holders with their digital assets stored in either an Legacy Xdrive account or an AOL Xdrive account? Time is running out to get those assets….AOL is shutting down Xdrive on 12JAN2009….Hurry….!

    I recommend choosing ElephantDrive and to make transferring those digital assets over as easy as possible just click the link http://www.elephantdrive.com/m/ct.aspx?ici=267 …this is the Xdrive to ElephantDrive migration page.

    Xdrive and ElephantDrive have worked out a process to help account holders make the transition as easy as possible especially if you don’t have the time to babysit the zipping process, one of mine took over 8 hours.

    ElephantDrive uses the Open Xdrive API to access your account and perform the zipping process for you. Once your accounts data is zipped up a new ElephantDrive account will be created containing your assets.

    There are several other online storage competitors out there, some offering Free accounts ranging in many quotas and paid subscriptions that will cover not only individual consumers needs but SMB companies needs and subscriptions that will cover large companies enterprise needs.

    Here’s one list I recommend checking out;
