FreeNAS: short review

"Testing I did in my lab with FreeNAS on a high end Xeon with SATA disks simply screamed. There's just no other way to describe it. I ran my throughput tests five times before I was sure I hadn't made some fundamental mistake with the math. I saw $75k performance from a $5k box running a beta NAS software platform."

Whether you're a fan of open source or not, it's not hard to see how the open source community has pushed, and continues to push the vendors technologists along the curve. If you're not supporting open source in some way, why not?

    Hi Andrew,

thanks for the link to my web site TheStroageForum.COM and the review I did on FreeNAS.

You’re so right with your comment “if you’re not supporting open source in some way, then why not?” – indeed open source is all too often the catch cry of the new tech wave, but there is a solid place for open source, and I for one know through it’s use and being hands on myself, that open source is a force to be reconed with and people either need to “get on the party bus, or get out of the way” ;-)

Stay tuned as I’ll be running a follow up series of reveiws and tests on related open source storage solutions, and platforms, with the aim to running a monthly detailed hands on audit and review of all and any NAS platform, open source or not, that I can get my hands on.

Love your site and again thanks for picking up my article.

    Let’s share cross links ;-)

    Cheers,

    Dez

When I first read this blog I remained astonished by the statement:
“I saw $75k performance from a $5k box running a beta NAS software platform.”
It’s true I always supported (at least morally) the open-source community, but I never thought they would get this far. But how far will they get until they are bought by a big software producer?
