data, files and more, are now the tool of choice by malware intruders to get into your system without detection. The rootkits either modify parts of the operating system or install themselves. Your entire database is exposed. There are ways to defend against a rootkit intrusion. One involves putting a security application in place that will reveal the rootkit and halt any attack or penetration. The other tactic is monitoring the system and knowing what to look for.
Trend Micro has a white paper that explains how to identify a rootkit intrusion attempt. The paper includes screen prints of what a typical attack might look like, and steps to take in order to prevent the intrusion. You can read the white paper at the Trend Micro website.
