Intel has released a new range of faster and cheaper solid state drives (SSDs).
"The X25-M SSDs for laptop and desktop PCs deliver close to double the write performance of Intel's earlier models... read speeds are similar to the 35,000 I/Os per second of Intel's prior technology and so many users might not notice much difference between the two," writes The Inquirer's Nick Farrell. "However, the real difference is that the cost of the newer SSDs is much lower."
"The price drop is the result of Intel moving the product line to a 34-nanometer manufacturing process for NAND flash memory used in SSDs from the 50-nm process used in making the previous generation," writes InformationWeek's Antone Gonsalves. "Also as a result of the shift, the die size of the memory is smaller and the engineering design more advanced."
"Channel prices for the X25-M 80GB are $225 for quantities up to 1,000 units," writes The Register's Chris Mellor. "This compares to the original introduction price of $595 a year ago. The 160GB version is also cheaper, at $440, compared to $945 at introduction."
