Three dimensional storage? To hear it, many people begin to envision the return of the file cabinet. Yet thanks to holographic technology, millions of pages (that's right – pages) of information can be stored on what looks like hyper-driven floppy disks. InPhase Technologies, teaming up with Maxell USA, is one step closer to releasing the world's first holographic storage unit. The storage reader, no larger than a desktop computer, houses a holographic read/write head, data channel and electronics. This puppy's fast – 407 nanometer laser records 1.3 million bits of data. It's also robust – one 300 GB disk holds the equivalent of 462 CD ROMS worth of data.
