EMC Makes Storage Security Push:
"Lost data tapes, database breaches and regulations requiring secure data retention moved storage security to the forefront last year. In response, EMC and other vendors have been scrambling to offer greater data security features. EMC promised greater emphasis on security at its annual analyst meeting last year, and also began reselling storage security gear."
Storage and security are often (perhaps generally?) regarded/funded as separate items within the IT budget - often handled by completely separate teams, and thus, historically, there's been very little overlap. In these days of heightened information theft threat, the need for security and storage systems to be more closely aligned has become apparent to the market.
While it's easy to argue that we're in danger of being too paranoid
about this sort of thing, security professionals will generally suggest that we're not being paranoid enough, or not in the right way.
I've been known to describe the security parts of my job as 'being professionally paranoid"; Perhaps it's time that storage professionals started thinking that way about data protection as well as integrity.
