ATA over Ethernet - set to rock the storage boat?

Upstart could shake up networked storage | CNET News.com:
First came Fibre Channel, then iSCSI. Now, for the increasingly popular idea of using a network to connect storage to servers, there's a third option called ATA over Ethernet.
As the linked article points out, there are some serious limitations to AoE, mostly around the fact that it's over plain ethernet, not over IP (like iSCSI is), so it's not routable. While this increases its simplicity, is it too simple for real world use?
